![]() ![]() A repeat scan with Total Security brought the scan time down to 34 minutes. Some antivirus utilities, this one included, perform a kind of optimization during the first scan, making subsequent scans run faster-sometimes much faster. You can schedule a full or quick scan to run daily, weekly, or monthly. As with any antivirus, you should run a full scan after installation, to catch any lurking malware.Īfter you complete a scan, the program suggests setting up a regular schedule. The scan checks system settings, common programs, running processes, and startup items first, then it goes on to scan all files. When I ran a full anti-malware scan on a clean system, it took 2 hours and 32 minutes, about a half-hour longer than the current average. The Security Check included in Full Check was a quick scan, just looking for active threats, as it finished quickly and found nothing. ![]() A Full Check on my virtual machine test system finished in just a few minutes and found a variety of things to fix. Clicking the big Check Now button runs six scans: System Repair, Security Threat, System Performance Enhancement, Bootup Speed Optimization, Registry Clean, and System Junk. Total Security’s main window focuses on what it calls Full Check. The best antivirus tools give you maximum security without impacting performance. Don’t even think about using the even-less-secure Performance mode. Initially, it’s set to Balanced, but in this mode, Total Security doesn’t bother to use its KunPeng antivirus engine and leaves other protective layers disabled.Īnybody who uses this tool absolutely must crank protection up to the Security level, as I did for testing. Clicking this icon reveals that protection comes in three modes: Performance, Balanced, and Security. I enabled detection of these programs, which, while not actively malicious, are still undesirable.Ī large icon at the top-left corner displays the legend “Protection: On” when everything is configured correctly. Flipping through the settings, I noticed that the detection of PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) was off. There’s an extension available for Yandex as well, for those countries where Yandex is popular. Searching the Chrome store didn’t turn it up, and a message to tech support remains unanswered. As for the Chrome extension, whether I tried to install it from within the app or from the website, I just got an error. I also made sure to install browser extensions for Firefox, Opera, and Edge. ![]() I also disabled a free trial of the company’s Desktop Organizer tool.Īfter installing the app on my test system, I checked for updates, confirming that the program was already fully updated. For testing purposes, I ignored them all. I imagine Qihoo gets some small affiliate income when you choose to install these. It also runs what it calls Instant Setup, a tool that can install a plethora of unrelated “popular software.” Programs offered include Opera, Skype, Line, WhatsApp, and VLC Media Player, among others. The mini-installer downloads and executes the latest version of the full installation program. Installing this antivirus app is quick and simple. For this review, I’ll simply call it Total Security. The Western version uses the name 360 Total Security, de-emphasizing the Qihoo brand. In China, this antivirus goes by Qihoo 360 Safeguard. For a free security suite, like Total Security but with all cylinders firing, look to Avast One Essential. If you want a straight antivirus, consider AVG AntiVirus Free, which gets good scores in lab tests and our own tests. Instead of Total Security, look at our Editors’ Choice winners for free antivirus. This bright and attractive free software piles on tons of bonus features, but those additions can’t make up for the fact that its core antivirus features just don’t make the grade. However, Qihoo 360 Total Security isn’t part of that group. Microsoft’s built-in antivirus steps up if there’s no other security software installed, but you can raise your protection game by installing a third-party antivirus utility most of the paid ones and even many free antivirus tools outperform the protection built into Windows. Antivirus protection is an absolute must for modern Windows computers. ![]()
